My daughter is join her school`s band and wants to play tenor sax. We have rented one from our local instrument store; an Antiqua Winds (student model I presume). I know nothing about saxes but would like to purchase one and need some advice. I have been reading about the different brands and have a pretty good idea about what brand we should look at but I want to know the difference between a student model and a professional model. I have my eye on one, but it is a professional model. Can a beginner play a professional model? What problems might she have trying too?

Yes, a begginer can play a professional sax without any trouble. In fact, he/she can probably learn to play easier than with a begginer sax. A beggining sax is called "beggining" becuse it is made cheaply, that`s why it`s so much cheaper than a professional one. If your daughter is a begginer, then I would recomend buying a Yamaha 23, the best begining sax available. You shouldn`t buy a professional horn unless you are sure that your daughter would stick with playing it and not quit or change instrument. Professional instruments are made very carefully and carefully tested, they are very delicate things. So although it is easier to play than a beggining horn, it can be broken easily. Begining instruments are made to withstand... well, children. Another thing, if your daughter is going to be in a marching band, now or in the future, she should always march with a beggining horn. Nothing wears a horn down faster than marching with it. So, in conclusion, unless you are sure your daughter is very responsible and determined, or you are just filthy rich, don`t buy a professional horn. I hope I helped

By the way, what brand and product of professional horn are you looking at? Maybe I can tell you if it`s good.

Yes, your comments have helped! Thank you!

I am looking at the Yamaha 23 as far as student horns go.

The pro horn I am looking at is by E.M. Winston, Presidental series. Do you know anyone who have had any experience with this brand?

Personally, I have never heard of this "E.M. Winston, Presidental series," so I can`t tell you if it`s good. I think since it`s not a really popular one, then it`s not a very good one. But don`t take my word for it. You should let a professional or a teacher test it (If available.)

Well personally, I own a Winston horn. Its a Saprano Sax. And it isnt really a good instrument. But for a beginner, a student its ok. So far as Yamaha, they make good horns. My alto is a Selmer Professional. Very very good instrument. If anything Selmers are good. They can be pretty pricey, but to me it was worth it. My beginner horn was a Selmer so beginners can play professional horns, but I wouldnt suggest it. Because if you pay the money for the Sax you wouldnt want it to be dinged up and messed up when your child is at school or something of that nature . Just my 2 cents. Hope I helped alittle!
