Okay, after expressing an interest several times my parnets suprised me with a soprano sax yeaterday, a nice suprise. The Problem is i have had no sax instruction (i play oboe, bassoon, and guitar) and really dont know where to begin... Actually if someone could just tell me what key its in and where to get some fingerings i would really, really appreciate it. I am also looking for instruction books for beginners, my brother plays alto and the fingerings appear to be the same but the key is different... then again playing the oboe in concert key has removed any conception of "key" that i would have had normally. Well, anyway, some help about this really really cool looking metal instrument would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Lucky you, I`ve been trying 2 convince my parents 2 buy me a soprano 4 ages, I play clarinet and they reckon I should just focus on that... anyway...

Most soprano saxes are in the key of Bb, so a C on it will be the same as a Bb on a piano. The fingerings are mostly the same as on Alto, and tenor and baritone as well. Just a few different keys, like F# on some altos, but that shouldn`t matter.
When I was looking for a book to start, I chose the "Learn as you play" saxophone book, mostly because it is one book 2 suit all saxes, and then the accompaniment book is different for different saxes.

I hope that helps. Just remember, a good teacher will always help, especially with the technique in playing

I found that a good way to get a grounding and learn how to wrap my fingers around the keys is to go online and get a fingering chart, and print it out. After you learn what the notes are, it just gets easier, as I`m sure you know from playing the other instruments. The fingers are very similar to the upper fingerings on a clarinet, if that helps at all.

Thanks for the help... I have been looking for soprano sax fingering charts but all the charts I have found are for all saxes and I was under the impression that they are in different keys... If this is the case then im still in the same position as I was before...

The fingering is the same. Different key means a C on an alto will not same as a C on a soprano. However, the fingering is generally the same, so your book on "all" saxes will work.
Good Luck

Yeah, I managed to get one out of my parents a year ago. I`ve played every sax except for a Tenor so far...

Finding free sheet music online for the soprano is pretty tough... Still, I love playing it. I think it has the best sound out of all the saxes...

If you need a fingering chart http://www.wfg.woodwind.org/sax_fing.html
Not the best one, but the best I could do for a quick search on vivisimo(search engine better than google I think) -Moogle

Well, first off...even though the fingerings for the soprano are the same as the other saxes you actually have to train your mouth to be able to stand the very small mouthpiece and reed...but I guess you already have that covered. I got my soprano about a year ago (I already play the alto) and I still have the most difficulties with the high notes. Just keep working at it and it will all be okay. You should be able to catch on with the notes. Shameless plug time...I am in the Coon Rapids Marching Cardinals from Minnesota and we have an awesome show and I actually have two soprano solos...Yeah for me! Good luck with your soprano...I love mine!

Hey, I play clarinet, and I want to play bassoon. My band director is bringing one for me to play, but I was wondering if any of you could kinda give me an idea how to play?

my band is kindof weird... we dont have many of the more "uncommon" instruments (contrabass, bassoon, soprano sax)... what do sopranos sound like? i play oboe and alto sax, and i think it`d be cool to play a soprano sax
