errr, Are you doing something specific for Solo & Ensemble becz they may want you to play a specific set of scales - usually 2 octaves or more (which would include the palm keys).

But if you start at low C go up and back down 2 octaves you should be okay for general playing/practicing.

In a Bb scale you will play Bb and Eb

So start at low C (1 line below the staff)

C, D, Eb, F, G, A, Bb, C .. then another octave up then back down 2 octaves.

hope that helps.

What the hell, a Bb scale starts on Bb, not C. It`s Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G, A, Bb. And you can start on the low Bb, which is the lowest note on the saxophone (except bari).

I don`t know about you W but you can start a scale on any note that you want if you are playing by yourself. I was giving an easy example.

Back in the 80`s in a State Solo & Ensemble Pro IV the judge told me what key, what note to start on and what top note to play to. At that level they usually know you can play they just want to try to mess you up to see how good you actually are.

If you are good enough, you can play any key starting on any note. It just doesn`t matter now does it?

In a High School band you may start on certain notes becz you are playing concert pitches. And usually that`s all that you do too.

A Bb scale starts on a Bb. What you are talking about is inversions of scales. C would be the second inversion of Bb, which is called the Dorian minor. IT IS NOT A MAJOR SCALE, which is what 0415 originally asked for.

By the way, where are you from? I have never heard of this way of playing scales at All State.
