What is the general instrumentation for a sax trio? I`m trying to put one together with some friends, but which saxes are typical for a trio? I`m thinking either 2 altos and a tenor, or a soprano, a tenor and an alto.

A saxophone trio is not very common, whereas a saxophone quartet or a quintet is more common. But I guess a soprano, alto, and tenor works. Two altos and a tenor would probably sound better, though.

Ok, what would instrumentation be for a quartet? Would there be many pieces without a bari sax part?

A saxphone quartet is made up of a soprano, an alto, a tenor, and a bari. Or it could be two altos, a tenor, and a bari. I don`t think there`s anything written without a bari, but you could always transpose.
