It takes a whille before you can hum and play the right way together. It just takes some practice, have you ever tried rubing your stomach in a circle with one hand and taping your head with the orther.Growling is kinda like that but with huming and playing.

Yeah, I had trouble at first, too. Make sure to just force air into the horn.

yeah, humming a different note is the best method. usually you want to hum a 3rd above what you are playing. for example, if you are playing a c, you will want to hum and e.

Ok, back to growling. Anyways, it doesn`t mater what grade you`re in. I have a friend who just graduated, and I taught him how to growl earlier this year, and he still can`t do it completely right. I am now a sophomore, and have been growling for several years. Basically, anything from growls to altissimo to multiphonics really takes a lot of time before you can do it well.

I`ve growled in concerts and many times while I was miked and it has never come through so long as you have a sufficient air flow...If the hum is overpowering the air flow, then you`ll have a problem. Practice controlling the two of the them at varying volumes and you should be fine.

I`ve found that when learning how to growl, it`s best to get the note you want to play, then hum a different note. This helps you get the technique of growling down pat. Once you learn the nuances of the technique you`ll be able to get the note & hum at the same time. I play tenor in 3 different bands and this method worked great to learn how to growl. Good Luck & practice, practice , practice!

OK i just learned how to growl myself and what you got to do is not hum but growl with the back of your throat to make a noise, now put the sax to your mouth and do the same thing, it will sound like crap the first time but practice that for awhile and eventually it turns into a cool sound but you just gotta all out growl with your throat into your sax
