Hey, has anyone played a bass sax, and know where to get one for less than $20,000?

Back in high school I knew someone who switch to bass sax from bari sax but it was the schools.

Bass sax is in Bb, right?

Tenor is Bb

How big is the thing, like six feet or something? (Bass, not bari)

I heard rumours that a pub in London has a bass sax, and they have to wheel it out if someone wants to play it. Rumour has it that even your hardest sax players can only manage one note without taking another deep breath. Perhaps it was a sub-contra-bass sax or something, I forget now.

A bass saxophone is Bb and half an octave lower than the bari, just like the bari is half an octave lower than a tenor etc. I saw a guy playing a bass sax in Disney World in a sax quartet, he had it on a harness. Arturo Sandoval`s latest CD (Trumpet Evolution) has a bass saxophone in one song (At the Jazz Band Ball). Its the contrabass saxophone that is close to 6 feet tall and is wheeled around. Its in Eb and is a full octave lower than the bari. There are very few left in the world of those, and they probably would take a breath a note, not to mention the delay after moving the keys.

So, from what I gather, saxes below Bass are impratical; get a tuba.

What about the higher saxes, like the soprillio?

While I was in college at Cal State Los
Angeles, I played a bass sax on a few
songs in the jazz band and with the saxophone
choir. I played it on a stand rather than with
the neck strap. It didn`t take as much air
as you might think. It was similar to playing
bari. There is a contra bass sax, but I
have only seen pictures. These instruments are
not very practical, since there is little music
written for them.

I have a bass sax for sale. It is an Evette Shaefer (Buffet) of mid- 1930`s vintage. Plays fine, but could use a better mouthpiece. $6500 w. good case. gdweed@juno.com

Does anyone have a line on a stand for a bass sax? Playing one on a wheeled stand is impractical if you are doubling on bari, etc., and there are cords running on the floor. A good stand to lift the sax off of is needed.
