You can make a bari mouthpiece work, but it`s better to use a real bass sax mouthpiece (yes, they make them).

I have played a bass sax. It reacts suprisingly well to the calls that a bari would need. It is pitched in Bb and is an octave lower than the tenor sax. It requires as much air as a baritone sax plus a little more. Most of the older bass saxes (produced by Conn and Buescher) used bari sax mouthpieces. Currently their are three companies that still produce bass saxes. Keilwerth (which I own) is keyed from low Bb to high Eb. Selmer has one keyed from low Bb to to high F# and Orsi in Milan makes a bass sax from low Bb to high Eb. On the other hand the bass sax is a dwarf compared to my Contra-Bass saxophone. The bass sax stands at about 4.5 feet and weighs only 20 pounds. The contra-bass weighs 55 pounds and stands at a daunting 6`4". The older contra-basses made by Everett Schafer and Conn stood at 6`8" but now Orsi in Milan is the only company that produces them and they are now 6`4 keyed from low Bb to high F (F# if special ordered.) The contra-bass is pitched in EEb.

I may be interested in RENTING a bass sax during Sept and Oct 2005. Any one have one they would be willing to RENT? If so, will pick up shipping charges both ways from this end, of course.
