Hey, I`ve been playing the alto sax for a while, I started with flute, so I know almost all the fingerings and all that stuff. I want to get a soprano sax for my birthday, and I`ve always liked Kenny G.`s sop. sax, after I get the brand he has and the mouthpiece and all he has, how easy is it to make the "kenny g sound"?

This doesn`t help much, but in my opinion, the "kenny g." tone doesn`t exist. Sorry. Just play good, and synthesise the background with crappy sounding bass ect. I don`t think it`s fair to call any tone a names tone. Its just a way to play; see the other Kenny G topics for more help.

if anyone, has the following
Selmer Mark VI soprano - $2,500
Dukoff D8 mouthpiece - $ 200
Rovner Lig ature - $ 20
Hemke 2.5 reed - $ 1.50
(kenny g`s sax and parts)
how easy is it to play it and make a sound just like or close to kenny g`s? is it really easy, easy, or impossible? because if it is impossible, then i won`t bother getting a soprano.
and how does a regular soprano sound?

It`s obviuosly not impossible, otherwise he couldn`t do it either. Since you bought his particular outfit, you just have to be good. Then, the tones you make can be like his, or not be like his. Quite simply, you make the tones. A saxaphone doesn`t just give one Monotone, droning on and on. If you play classical, make the tone pretty and clean. jazzy, play gutsy, loud, with plenty of accents. But then, there are so many different types of jazz and classical music...

If you buy all the "Kenny G. stuff", it would deffinately be easier, if possible, to have his tone; however, everyone has there own unique tone and sound. If you want to play like Kenny G., i would say buy it all and practice for a few dozen years. I know that the mark VI is definately the best saxophone and even if you can`t play like kenny, you won`t be sorry you bought it.

In general, if you want to sound like Kenny G. the best advice I can give you is to suggest that you have your head checked.

More specifically, put the instrument in the side of your mouth where it has no chance of colliding with your tongue so you won`t have to bother to learn tonguing, hold the instrument incorrectly, and learn to play a few childishly easy fast meaningless flurries and throw them in indiscriminately.

Walter Becker of Steely Dan poses the following puzzle:

You find yourself in a room with Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Kenny G. You have in your hand a revolver with two bullets. What should you do?

The answer:

Shoot Kenny G. TWICE, just to be sure.
