I`m playing on a Yamaha YAS-23 model. Would like to know some good combinations of mouthpiece and reed, I also play Clarinet. I play the alto saxophone mostly in Jazz Band.

Thanks!

On any sax, my favorite mouthpiece is a Selmer C*. I don`t really mind what reeds I get, though a french cut supposedly makes them last longer. The C* gives the sax more tone, better tone, and its more freeblowing then other mouthpieces. But, there are specific types of mouthpieces, like jazz or classical. A good jazz mouthpiece is an Ottolink. Selmer makes a Classical one.

The C* runs at around $120. The others vary, I think they are in the $200 range. normally. A site that sells them cheaper that I can verify is good; Frederic Weiner Inc.
Just do a search on the web

I would agree with what has been said. A Selmer S80 mouthpiece with a C* facing is probably the best all around mouthpiece. It is the industry standard for concert band, but can be used in jazz band as well. I wouldn`t use it in a rock or R&B setting, but for any school application it will do well. You can pick one up for under $80 at the woodwind and brasswind.

In a jazz band setting on a budget, I would recommend rico royal reeds. If you are willing to spend a bit more, Hemke Premiums are great for concert band, and rico jazz select for jazz band. You will need to decide if you prefer filed or unfiled. These reeds are more consistant out of the box than most other brands.

Just to add a note:
I have used a Selmer C* Mouth Piece for 2 years before I bought a vintage Selmer D*

-Selmer C* Mouth Pieces are not reliable nor do they have a consistant tone. They are also somewhat fragile as mine cracked from normal use.

Peter, I have to disagree with your comment on C*. I have used one for amybe four years and know others who have used them forever. They work great for us, and have never cracked or sounded bad. Perhaps yours was just a bad one. Did you get it used? I did, and it`s great.

I can understand your point Wildband as i know many other people who enjoy them as you do, in fact that was my first m.p. and I did enjoy it as well. However one day at my sax. lesson, as i asked my teacher if there was any other decent m.p. to buy (after my C* somehow cracked) he replied shocked and told me of how they have problems and once I actually started paying attention to some minor things, I could see how other mouthpieces such as the Vandoren 45 and Selmer D* were just THAT much better.

Ok, fair enough Peter. Thank you. So is D* a wider facing then C*?

Well, the D* is a little bit wider and I beleive it is a little longer as well. It is a vintage (approx. 1955) m.p. and from what I hear from the pros, is that it`s one of the best.
Really interesting m.p. though, also very rare/pricey. I`d greatly recommend them.
