THere`s a big difference, the tone sure but really it`s in how you CAN play them, alto has so many limits....tenor doesn`t.

Tenor vs. Alto?

I`m bored, so I`ll just jump into this conversation thing. Well, I noticed how everyone was comparing altos and tenors. In my opinion, alto is a much better instrument. Yes, to some it may sound like a buzzy instrument, but if you have a lot of experience with it, you can make it play just as smoothly as a tenor. Plus, in jazz bands, you usually want the alto to be the loudest. So, if you want to play loud and not get in trouble for it, I suggest playing alto. I play both the alto and tenor sax, and to be frank, the tenor is a pain in the butt. I think it`s easier to solo on the alto than it is on tenor. But of course, it depends on the person. What`s easy for one person can be extremely complicated for another.

Hey I play tenor too and it was really hard to get the low notes out. It could be your reed or your air. I switched to a rico jazz select reed and it really helped a lot.

No no get a soprano. It`s sooo beautiful, so much better than tenor - i play both and tenor is so clumpy and yucky compared to the clear loverly sounds of a soprano!

I`ve been playing the tenor saxaphone for many years and that is the one problem for newer tenor saxaphones. It should come naturally to you so just keep that jaw down. Open your throat too. I know this has been old news to you now but it should start feeling normal. I`ve been studying in one of the best schools for music. To tell you the truth I was just looking for sheet music.
