Which is better: a sore jaw or a sore lip? I never have both problems at the same time, so I`m wondering which problem is the result of a better technique.

Squeaks are usually caused by a too tight embouchure or a leak in the saxophone.

Yes, don`t squeeze too tightly or it will cause squeaking, i would also at your embouchure before blaming the sax because that is probably it. For me, i usually move my bottom lip more down the mouth piece, and make sure that i`m tight but not too tight.
