Get whatever suits you. When you`re buying one, bring your read and test it out.
I actually don`t know what my mouthpiece is...but it`s metal.

Scarlett is right, you have to get one that suits you and your playing style. I use an Otto Link for Jazz and a Selmer C* Soloist for Classical, but that is what I like to use. When you do try out a mouthpiece, bring a friend, we have a hard time hearing what we sound like when we play, so when we think our playing sounds great, to everyone else it might sound....well you know

For jazz I would suggest a meyer, an otto link, or a vandoren mouthpiece (which is what I use). The facings differ on all these brands, so experiment a little. For classical, I believe that there is really only one good brand. Selmer C*`s or their S-90`s (also what I have) are an excellent choice.

my teacher wanted me to get a Selmer C* but it costs too much money. Plus I had only started playing. My parents didn`t know if I was serious about it or not

Most band teachers will say a selmer C* because it is a widely know and very good mouthpiece, but there are plenty of other good ones out there.
No matter how you slice it, if you want a good mouthpiece, you have to shell out the money. If your parents don`t want to buy you one yet, use the one that came with your saxophone, they are usually not that bad. I used the one that came with my horn all the way thru high school, and did not finally get a C* soloist till my first year as a music major.
Although it would be nice to have a good mouthpiece right away, you might just have to save up and get one later.

Honestly I do not like the Selmer S-80 C*`s one bit. I tried it with a lot of different reeds and it does not work for me at all. It has a sound much better than my original student mouthpiece, but the tone was far inferior to my larry teal. C*`s aren`t really that expensive for mouthpieces; the larry teals are usually quite pricy though.
I got mine from my music store for 80 bucks because i know the guy. Hehehehehehehehehehe.
