We have a lack of tenor saxophones in my jazz band, so I offered to play, figuring the experience would do me some good.

Is there anything different from Alto Sax to Tenor Sax that could help me or that I should know about?

Thanks a bunch

Woohoo Scarlett, and welcome to the better world (jk alto players). The only differences that I can think of is that your embouchure will change, and the tenor voicing is a little different but it is very easy to get used to. Do some embouchure exercises, and work on the lower register alot because that will take a bit more practice (I still have problems getting it perfect).
Go for it though we have a lack of tenor players in this world, and when played right the tenor has a beautiful sound, that in my opinion, is unmatched.

One more important thing i forgot to tell you about the tenor. You might remember a time when playing octave G was a pain, because it was the key that would trigger open the lower octave key and close the upper, so sometimes you would get a horrible sharp d or multiphonic. Well this problem is worse on the tenor than the alto. I had it down for a long time, and when my wisdom teeth were pulled, it changed my jaw and again I had difficulties. The best advise, if you have this problem, is to make sure you use warm air (you should always use warm air, but we forget sometimes) kinda like trying to see your breath in the winter. I do hope this doesn`t pose a problem for you because it can be very frustrating.

Good luck

Ouch, I hate that horrible G sound on alto, but I`ve now managed to keep that in control...oh yeah. Thanks Cj, you rock. I think i`ll just have to change my embouchure slightyly and have more air and better breathing control, should be a breeze with a little bit of practice.

I love the sound of tenor though, it sounds really classy and smooth when you play jazz.
