yea ur mouthpiece, ligature, and sax efect how your tone is and how well you can hit notes. A pro might be able to do it anyway but im not a pro. I have a series II with a meyer 6, and i just switched from a lig that came with my $15 yamaha mouthpiece when i was a beginner to an Olegature by Rico. My range immediately went up over an octave and i can control the pitches now. I can easily play ppp to fff and play ligit with my meyer on as well as jazz. I also have the selmer c* mouthpiece and i can hardly do any altissimo on that. Not enough control yet. But the new ligature made a world of difference. It is $70 though. I got it on ebay for cheap. THE SECRETS OUT!!

altissimo notes can only be played well with lots of practice. For the first while you will find that your embechure is out of wack and you squeek more. Your tone mighnt also get worse. Once you are able to play a G (the fourth one, yes that high) you have mastered altissimo, anything above that does not sound good. The highest any written piece of music that i have played of goes to an F (the fourth F). You should not be able to tell a difference in tone quality between your regular range and your altissimo range
The best reeds by far for reaching altissimo notes are Alexander D.C. reeds THEY ARE THE BEST

yes, so I have gathered reeds are vital. I usually play on simple Rico Royal 3`s. What strength is ideal for altissimo? 4`s or 5`s?

reeds and mouthpieces are the most important part of achieving altissimo. Whenever i play something with a lot of altissimo notes in it, i use a 4 1/2 or 5 (i use 3 1/2 regularly).

Jen:
The altissimo register contains any note higher than the normal range of the saxophone (high F).
http://wfg.woodwind.org has some pretty good sax altissimo fingerings.

i would have to disagree on that one bleedinggumsmurphy. There is no point in being able to play high notes if u have to switch your reed when u have to play high. It`s all about practice. The setup can help though. A pro will play good altissimo with any mouthpiece, sax, reed, reed size. My private teacher showed this to me on my marching band yamaha student with a plastic mouthpiece and a rico 2 1/2 reed. Sounded aweesome.

reeds dont really make that big of a difference in altissimo, and I usually use use 3, sometimes 3 1/2 but it really doesnt matter because the only reason you increase size is to improve your tone quality, and for some people the best is 3 some it is 4. To have optimal tone quality you have to be at least on a 3. If you are below 3 it just means that you havent been playing very long, or you just dont practice, just make sure you work hard to get to a 3. the best reeds for overall playing are alexander reeds they have 3 kinds I use all 3 i use the classique for classical the DC for jazz and the superial for contemporary or like praise team stuff, but the DC are my favorite

I would advise not trying to learn altissimo until you have a great tone quality, and know how to play the sax very well because if you dont already have great tone altissimo notes will sound even worse horrible.

Incredible book with great exercises and fingerings for Altissimo

A few years ago my mentor began passing on the altissimo lessons. Its important to know that not all fingerings work from Tenor to Alto...or from Selmer Tenor to Conn Tenor...very variable. I play a MK VI and the Fingerings in this following book: Ted Nash`s Studies in High Harmonics for Tenor and alto is priceless. I found a copy in an LA music store so it is now back in print. It has multiple examples of fingerings for tenors and separate fingerings for altos.
This process is incredible for learning how to really manipulate your horn. And granted the altissimo register is really a gimmick for moving an otherwise ignorant audience, but cmon...we all wish we could do it Like Lenny Pickett. BTW I have Lenny`s personal fingerings if interested.
This book is priceless and will go a long way in helping you. MOST IMPORTANTLY: GET some professional instruction. You will learn a lot faster, if at all, than alone.
Good luck,
Saxyjeff
