I`m currently in the 7th grade right now and I`m playing the Alto Saxphone. I`ve been practicing and playing a lot and I`ve decided that I needed a new mouthpiece. I`m planning on playing all through high school so I thought its better to get one now then later right?

Do you guys have any tips on buying mouthpieces? I`ve heard that Dukoffs were good but I wasn`t sure on the difference between D6,D7,D8,D9 etc. Since I`m playing jazz, I wanted to purchase a mouthpiece that would sound good for it. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Thank you in advance. :]
If you have any good tips, post them here too!

I would recommend a Selmer C*, C**, or D. They lean more toward classical playing, but can be used for jazz as well. If not the C*, go for just about any Vandoren mpc. (pardon my lack of expertise.)

If you`re playing jazz, get a real jazzy mouthpiece like...
JodyJazz
Otto Link
Meyer
Rousseau JDX and Studio Jazz
Bobby Dukoff

When you buy a mouthpiece, try out as many as you possibly can, and compare their tone quality, tone color, projection, and overall sound, as well as their level of comfort.
The letter of the mouthpiece refers to the type of chamber it has, which greatly affects the sound (see http://www.dukoff.com/product.html )
and the number has to do with how wide the tip opening is, which is really just a personal preference.

There isn`t really anything wrong with my mouthpiece but its for begginers and after 2 years of playing, I`ve decided to stick with the sax and get a better mouthpiece.

Thanks for all your help so far but... do you guys have any sugesstions for a music store? I think I`d just end up bringing my sax/reed to try out the mouthpieces till I get a one i like. But my knowledge of places to shop isn`t much beyond Mills Music.

I have no idea where you are and thus no idea what places would be in your area. If you`re on Long Island or in New York City, try Patchogue Family Melody Center (Suffolk), Frederic Weiner, Inc.(Nassau), or Roberto`s Woodwind and Brass. Also try ordering a few on a trial from wwbw.com.
Hope this helps,
