I don`t think so, I think it`s an orchestra instrument, or that`s what it is at my school. So no, it`s not, I guess. :-)

in England, there are actually recorder orchestras---some are 100 members strong---but they haven`t caught on here that much yet.

Its not a modern ban instrument. It`s best in old Baroque orchestras or Medieval groups. Marching bands? No. They`ll usualy want the Flute. Same with modern Orchestras. Google for a Recorder Society in your area, there probably is one and you`ll find people to help you and play with.

At my school, We are required to play recorder in 3rd and 4th grade, and in 5th grade+, we have to play piano, clarinet, trumpet, flute/piccolo, etc., but no recorder. (I`m in 5th grade and I play clarinet.)

recorder cant be played in school band most of the time because it doesnt have a big note range so some of the songs wouldnt sound right if the notes r too low or hogh for the recorder, but u could still play it in band if ur teacher lets u.

Yes it is possible to over-blow a recorder. It has no reed or proper mouth piece, so you have to use breathe control to reach most of the notes or is is just a squeaky irritating penney whistle.
A recorder is the precursor to the flute and then the clarinet. There are many type of recorders. Saporanino, Soprano, Tenor, alto, and bass. The bass one is much like a bass clarinet and the cheapest one is $200. The cheapest recorders run about $4 and are usually sopranos.
And the person who answered back in August was right, there are Baroque "bands" or orchestras that play mostly medieval music, but it has branched out.
If you get tired of your band director telling you not to try new things, pick up your recorder and an instruction book. ?run through the practice stuff and look up one of the very many community recorder groups. They even play rythm and vlues now days!
And the reason a lot of schools use them in elementary is they teach all the skills you need to play any other wind instrument, including reading music.

The recorder isn`t a band nor an orchestra instrument, you can check out any professional group and you won`t see any recorder players. However, I once heard a cool piece played by a band that opened up with a recorder solo, which was played by the piccolo player.
