Dude. Recorder is an instrument whether you like it or not.

A) It plays music.
B) You're just jealous of my mad recorder skills. (jk, but you actually need skill to play it well...)
C) It is a great beginner instrument. It builds up musical skills like rhythm and pitch. And some woodwind instruments are very similar.
D) It is actually played in songs.

One of my personal favorite songs (can't remember the name) has the recorder playing the melody throughout the song.

All I got to say is....
The Wedding Gift by Rawlins Cross

MacPherson's Lament sounds great on it too and I'm trying to learn Time in a Bottle by Jim Croche if I can figure out if the recorder I got is C or F.

Although not my favorite instrament it a great one to learn on. Plus once I learn a song on it it doesn't take long to learn it on the chanter. Some cases I need only learn it on the recorder and can play it on the chanter.

Bagpipes are my favorite.

I find it so funny that I was getting on 8-notes.com to say how stupid of an instrument the recorder is, AND THIS IS THE FIRST DISCUSSION I FOUND!
First off- The recorder was made to teach little kids in Elementary what notes are and the fundamentals of music.
Secondly- Its no more than a cheap flute.
Third....ly- I said so
Also- Violin friggin rocks
and ummm- yea, i mean, it *is* an instrument, it just sucks

bad

Now Precurser made a good point, once he learns the intonation and such on the recorder, he can easily convert it, to a better instrument- *cough*, And, yes, the recorder is a good learning device, but, it is still stupid.

Funny that you should call yourself fiddle. Im from Nova Scotia (latin for New Scotland) and almost everyone I know that has (or can play) the fiddle also owns (or can play) the recorder. OH and Fiddle if you think that its just a tool to teach the basics than I beg you to listen to Rawlins Cross - The Wedding Gift.

After reading all the posts I can only guess that I have the C. Its the 10 dollor cheapy that has been mentioned so I think I should follow the soprano/tenor scale. Darn thing came with a baroque fingering chart and two scales. Soprano/tenor and sopranino/alto. Same fingering, two different notes. I'm new to reading sheet music, my first instrument was the guitar and I always followed tabliture. What I've learned so far on other instruments I was taught by my wife.

Oh and The Wedding Gift by Rawlins Cross was done with a D tin whistle and not a recorder. That's just because they're a celtic band and the tin wistle is a celtic instrament. They can sound very similar.

<Added>

They do alot of songs with the tin whistle which sounds just as great on the recorder.
