A wooden one. However, it is the same notes on it so you can learn playing on which ever you want.

To me, wood also sounds better but it is causing some trouble. When you buy a new wood recorder, you are allowed only 10 min/day for the first week, 15 min/day for the second week and so on, because the material has to adjust to the moisture. You must not play the very high notes for the first few weeks. I bought myself a new rosewood descant recorder and whew - it seems I am oiling and airing and warming it all the time. It needs more oil than my car and I can only hope that the wood will be saturated eventually.

A plastic recorder is more robust and will never warp. A good platic recorder is better than a bad (or mishandled) wooden one, but not so good as a good wooden one.
