Hi! I dun play the recorder, but something to let u know. The recorder is the most special instrument in the world. Know why? Caz, it`s the only instrument that is capable of producing a pitch without harmonics! Do u pp know that?

I thought that the lowest note on the flute was also pretty close to a pure tone.

Sorry DW, I don`t know where you got your information but I think it`s incorrect. I have played my recorder into a spectrum analyser and I can tell you that the sound consists mostly of odd harmonics, ie. the fundamental frequency F, plus 3*F, 5*F etc. If you overblow a note and notice the tone getting richer, that`s due to the even harmonics starting up as well. You can try this experiment on a soprano recorder. Try playing a low D, because it tends to work especially well on that note. (Close all holes except the last double-hole). Play it softly first, then play louder until the note almost cracks. You should hear the tone come alive, because the even harmonics sound sweet.
A note without harmonics would be a pure sine wave. The best instrument to demonstrate that would be a synthesizer.
I agree with you though, that the recorder is special.

Oh now I know I had been so wrong. BTW, my previous lecturer in the Royal Schools told me that. And to think that he was a chief Theory Examiner...Hmmm, looks like I have to clear that up with all the students to whom I`ve mentioned this...U sure abt. what u say? Really? No harmonics? Then I`ve to start recalling whom I`ve told this to ...

Not to worry, DW. You will require courage and diplomacy if you plan to mention this to your teacher. Also, I probably should have mentioned that the recorder does have weaker harmonics than some other instruments, especially the brass section. Trumpets, trombones, etc. have harmonics which are often actually stronger than the fundamental note.
Why not try some experiments for yourself? There is a good piece of software here:-
http://www1.ocn.ne.jp/~tuner/tuner_e.html
It is designed for tuning instruments but will also show you the spectrum and the waveform of the sounds you play into it. You will need a microphone plugged into your soundcard to operate it, and you`ll also have to check that the microphone volume control (in the computer) isn`t set to zero or muted, otherwise the signal won`t get from the soundcard to the software.
A bit complicated perhaps, but if you manage to get it going you can try to sing a sine wave... I bet you can`t!
