I play a boxwood Moeck Rottenberg alto recorder at church. About a year ago, a flute player joined us. Both of us will tune against a tuner, and be in tune. Yet when we play together, there is something irritating that occurs. This problem only exists with the alto; I can play soprano and tenor while the flute is playing without issue. A friend suggested I try my Yamaha 302, the plastic recorder. When I play the plastic recorder with the flute player, we are in tune and the irritating overtone, or whatever, disappears.

Does anyone have experience with this problem and any ideas or solutions on solving it? Perhaps you have found a certain recorder make, wood or technique works better with a flute.

Bit late to answer you - I wonder if you have solved the problem. Wood instruments are dicky; they sometimes seem in tune and then when they get warmed up will change slightly. The plastic doesn't change as much. All woodwind instruments, not only recorders, share this characteristic.

Tried moving the mouthpiece out slightly from the next part of the body? - That changes the pitch slightly - worth a try.

I did solve this by purchasing a Mollenhauer Modern recorder in pallisander. Lazar Early Music, lent me both the modern and baroque voiced versions of the Modern recorder. Both of them worked great with the flute. I settled on purchasing the modern voiced Modern recorder and am having fun again.
