My friend is getting braces on today and she is worried that getting the braces will effect the way that she sings. I really do not know a lot that I can tell her because I had my braces for a while before I began to sing again so I was used to them. I was wondering if you guys have anything that I can tell her to help her in any way. She is quite upset. All ideas are much appreciated.

My friend had braces on for about 5 years, and he recently got them taken off. He is really into musical theatre, drama, all that stuff, and is taking voice lessons. I once asked him if the braces had any effect on his singing, and he said that they didn`t. It might have been different for you, though. If she played a wind instrument (esp. brass, reed woodwind) then she would be in a bit of a bind. However, I don`t think it would have a huge effect on one`s singing.

There`s your answer.

I had braces and I still sang the lead part in a musical... it`ll be weird for the first couple of weeks, but that`s just adjusting your speech. After you relearn to talk (which takes like 2 weeks maybe), it`s fine. Now playing trumpet, that was an adventure, though in the long run I think it made me better.

I agree. It will seem a bit strange at first, but over time, her singing will not be negatively effected. The modifications it might make would be good things! Encourage her with her singing and support her!

Thank you for all of the help. I play a reed woodwind and when I got them on I had a really hard time adjusting not only the embrochure but because of the pain that I had for a while after they were tightened. She came to me to ask because of haveing braces and not knowing what it would be like. She was so upset on the phone that she could hardly talk. Thanks again, I know it will help her alot.

I had braces for 2 and a half years and a expander (like a plate) and i was singing all the time in Chiors before and during ,and i could sing fine, i agree with others that it takes a while to talk properly, but that didn`t really affect my singing.

I am an advanced mezzo-soprano, and I got braces half a year into my weekly lessons, and it didn`t affect my singing at all. Tell your friend not to worry.

I`v had braces for a year and a half, now. At first it was weird, getting used to talking with them. But I joined the school choir half a year later and I sound fine because people compliment me on my voice. My friends want me to sing solos all the time- they say I`m good. Usually I don`t want to. Solos make me feel embarrassed.
