I am considering entering the Kiwanas festival this year, they have one class that is for the untrained vocalist. I`ve never taken lessons so I fall into this category. I sing alot of jazz and contempory and haven`t really been well exposed to great classical vocal songs. Any recomendations?? I have the range of a coloratura so high parts aren`t hard... I really want to win at this festival because then I`ll get a scholarship to study with a vocal teacher... something i can`t afford right now with flute lessons.

Anything from Carmen is good (Bizet). Habenera is the most famous piece.

Bist du Bei Mir is also rather pretty (J.S. Bach), but rather simple. It`s pretty beginner-ish, but if you`re looking for a lovely piece that isn`t hard, then go for that one.

Anything by Faure is absolutely beautiful. I`m in love with his "Pie Jesu" from his "Requiem", (Andrew Lloyd Webber`s version of "Pie Jesu" would also be good to audition with, although you need a young male counterpart) which is one of the saddest, most beautiful vocal pieces I`ve ever heard. I actually cried when I listened to it.

And, of course, Schubert`s "Ave Maria". It`s one of my absolute favorites.

If you want to sing something in English, then I would go with "A Bit of Earth" from "The Secret Garden", just about anything from "West Side Story" ("Tonight" is a good one if you want to show off your upper register), "Think of Me" from "The Phantom of the Opera" has a nice cadenza in it, and "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" is very pretty (also from Phantom of the Opera).

Hope these helped! Good luck with your audition.
