Hello everybody! I'm new to this particular forum...I've been posting on the violin forum for awhile. I love singing so much! Until this year I never really sang much outside of church, but in the three months I've been in the A'Cappella and Women's Ensembles I have noticed definite progress in my voice. Anyway....I am a sophomore this year, and at my school you are eligible to audition for the Mads choir the spring of your sophomore year. The auditions aren't until May but as most of the students let in will be seniors the season of, I want to prepare as much as possible! I haven't taken voice lessons in the past but am beginning to look into it for better technique and to smooth out my break (around an A above the stave).
I want to start looking at different options for songs, but have no idea where to begin. I'm assuming that it shouldn't be a pop song or anything....does anybody have any ideas? I can sing anywhere from 1st Soprano-1st Alto. Thanks :D

The Bad News: I'm also in 10th, and when I auditioned, the teacher told me that if someone is older, and fits the part, they will probably get it. After I did the audition, he said he loved my voice but that senority rules over all else. I know it sucks, but the youngest group gets the crap end of the stick.
The Good News: Auditionsing for a more advanced chorus gets your voice and personality out there for the next year and other sining opportuities.

What song are you doing?

Yay for the crappy end of the stick !!! I'm not sure what song I'm doing yet....they're in May, so it's not like it's last minute or whatever. I am excited!! I'm a little nervous though, there's a ton of juniors trying out so if anything I might make alternate.

Good for you! I remember when I first tried out I was really nervous, but I did my best and I ended up being the only freshman in the advanced choir! Anyway as for picking the song to sing, the best thing to do is find something that's easy for you but leans toward the classical genre, like a European folksong or something. A few songs that I would recommend for the beginning soprano are...
Danny Boy
When Love Is Kind
Angels Through The Night
My Favorite Things
The Water Is Wide
Wayfaring Stranger
The Stars Are With The Voyager
Simple Gifts
Carrickfergus

If you know any of those to be easy for you and sound good in your voice, that may be a desirable selection. I know you may think that singing something hard may show off what you can do, as I once thought, but it actually shows what you can't do yet. The bottom line: go with something you know, something you can sing easily, but is on the classical side, like the above songs.

Ah! How do you find a womans Ensamble, or a madrigal troupe? I would love to do that!
