First off, don't think that you have to "change" your voice in any way or add throaty, gritty sounds to your singing. That could really harm your voice, and besides, we the audience want to hear YOUR interpretation of the piece, not your attempt to fit your voice to an unrealistic standard.
Second, are you familiar with "belt" singing techniques? Many classical teachers and singers have negative attitudes toward belting, but it is the basis for most contemporary music singing. You might want to find a good teacher who understands belting, or do some reading on it. A great book to track down is Jan Sullivan's "The Phenomena of the Belt/Pop Voice" which can be had used online.
Good luck, and keep singing!

Have a listen to some Evanescence, and notice how she adds edge to her voice by adding twang to her sound, i suggest adding that as that will get you much closer to the kind of sound that you are looking for.
