My music teacher tells us to widen our eyes, and smile lots too. I think it helps to get your resonators working to produce a better sound. Also, over-emphasised mouth shapes help you to pronounce words and create stronger and more controlled vocal sounds.
I'm pretty sure this is why they say to do it. And obviously if you're performing on stage it adds emphasism and character to your performance too!

I think it is important to be expressive when singing. i used to watch my sisters sing in choirs and solos and they always used their faces to pull the audience in to the performance. and last term my singing teacher told me i had to use it so i could get a better mark and i did and i got a better mark. so i think its important but it also sorta depends on what you're singing. happy singing
