Hi all....

I'm a vocalist and has been advised not to take cold drinks to maintain or gain a good voice texture. Can any one here suggest me of what else should i eat or avoid to add quality to my voice? waitin for your replies.....

From what I hear it is Dairy products, chocolate, fatty foods, and to drink A LOT of water. But for me I don't cut it all off what I do is not have it on days I practice or if I were ever to perform I wouldn't eat it as much but thats just me!

You can eat and drink everything(except alcohol), but after that you should wait about 2-3 hours before starting singing. But anyway, if you are in a good shape and you are having an important practice day or performance, then it's better not to eat just before that(about 2h), especially stay away from chocolate. You certainly don't have to miss breakfast and lunch, if you have something important in the evening. But when there's a free day, then feel free to eat and drink anything you wish. After all it's quite personal and complicated topic, because sometimes it's even better to eat a bit while singing and what's most important is that, you shouldn't act the way people are telling, it's better to for you to experience different things through by yourself, because everyone is different.

Personally, I wait to eat before I do a serious performance, and drink nothing but water. If it's a less serious performance, I don't worry about it. Eating before doesn't affect me that much, but I just prefer to lay off before an important performance.

I avoid milk products starting the night before a performance. Then, I also drink plenty of water and avoid chocolate and sweets and soda. I make sure to drink warm water instead of cold that day. If I'm singing at a dinner, I avoid eating until I've sung or I eat very lightly and drink only water. People usually get kind of upset if you refuse to eat at a function where you're an honored guest.

The only things that I consider harmful when I sing are milk and a ton of food. Milk coats the throat so you don't get a clear tone when you sing. Eating way too much for me makes my vibrato sluggish and my notes aren't as clear in tone. If you tend to get really nervous then you also might feel slightly sick. Certain foods don't seem to affect me that much as long as I wait about an hour between singing and eating.
