I don`t think its possible to break a glass with a human voice, although very high frequencies can break glass.

While you were joking, that was still an interesting question. This is a myth, plainly stated. A human voice simply cannot generate the decibel levels, or for that matter, the frequency levels to shatter a pane of glass. I imagine if you recorded a human voice, increased the frequency (can be done in windows sound recorder rather effortlessly), and amplified it exponentially louder, that it could be done, but the fact remains, the solo human voice cannot physically damage anything. Even if you were to shout as loudly as you could into someone`s ear, I doubt you could cause them permanent hearing damage.

My aunt claims she broke glass while singing. Mind you, she also claimed that when she was driving along one day, her Rolls levitated and God spoke to her. She writes a crazy magazine that no one but nutters read and I really wouldn`t believe any thing she said. So.......

There is a woman who supposedly broke glass on Good Morning America by singing into a microphone and amplifying her voice. I think it`s supposed to air again May 11, 2005, but I`d have to look it up to be sure. Anyway, I`m sure you could look it up on Google if you wanted, lol.

HI!
The really important thing to remember
is that if you stop at glass it`s just
pathetic. };->
Like, there was this ninja who got
ticked off at some people who kept
talking while he was trying to rock
out on his guitar, so the ninja totally
flipped out and sang at them till
they all exploded!!! (true story.)

It IS possible

It IS possible to break a glass, though I`ve never done it (voice too messed up atm *cries a LOT*). If you`ve ever run a finger around the top of a wine glass, the note that that makes is the note it`ll take to shatter. It makes the glass vibrate so much that it breaks. But it HAS to be exactly that note, not even a tiny bit higher or lower. Apparently for the same reason they have to be careful building bridges so the frequency the bridge resonates at (and they do resonate, apparently)isn`t the same as the nearby traffic.
This is the only thing I`ve retained from physics class.

Emma,
I remember that from physics class as well, but I`m not entirely sure it`s been proven with a large structure. There are some very interesting accoustical principles here that would be interesting to further study (unfortunately, I need to "focus" on performance, lol...).

if you want to hurt a person with sound, go with low frequencies... they would do more dammage.... sound physics is awesome stuff

Jaime Vendera is recorded as the first person to ever do this with AND without an amplifier!
He is now one of our Staff Voice Teachers at the Virtual Conservatory of Sining ( http://singing.eblah.com ). He specializes in rock music.
