Hi!

First of all, I wish all horn French Horn players good luck with this forum! I play clarinet and bassoon and those forums are fantastic. Not so much topics here yet, but that`ll come... My brother is a semi-professional horn player and will certainly visit this forum!

I was wondering: As a horn normally uses a very small mouthpiece... is it easier to play when you have thin lips? I saw someone with thick lips playing and it seemed quite difficult :-)

I don`t know. If so, Randy Newman should take up the instrument immediately. In any case, get your brother-in-law here pronto.

Hmph.
Since I have medium sized lips, I don`t really know the answer to your question, but I`m sure thin lips will help because I have to kinda move my lips a bit when I switch from low note to high note vice versa because my lips isn`t fitted nicely. I also had a friend who played the horn and she had thin thin lips and she was pretty good, so I`m guessing thin lips would help but not essential?

I actually think thin vs. thick lips really would not matter. I mean, basically, it`s your aumbusure, not your lip size.

I`m not sure about thickness, but I`ve noticed a smaller mouth in general helps for horns.

Now that I think about it, I have small lips and I can hit fairly high for how long I`ve been playing. I guess, thin it is!

I`m afraid I don`t quite understand your question. Your friend is having trouble with, what now?

I dont think it matters too much, tho i would prefer medium sized lips... It really helps with your range, and tone quality at that!

As long as the lips viabrate well, it doesn't matter.

I don't believe that lip size really matters. i mean my lips are medium and i don't have any problems. i think it depends on how much you practice.

as long as the embouchure buzzes properly and its also the mindset of playing with difficulty that hinders the individual's ability to make music. in other words, its the mindset not the thickness of the lips.
