i'm on my way to try out for region orchestra, and later, region band. and so i was talking to an oboe player that is doing the same thing. in fact, were the only two people in the whole entire band going.(an oboe and a french horn... LOL) anyways, we were discussing ways to phsyke out the competition.(if there is any) and we decided to burn through our scales 2 octave and play them perfectly. the band teacher said, "if your lips can take it..." and i said "on second thought...." and then the oboist said "no prob" and now i'm sayin', is it better to thin the heard, or play it safe?

Around here, scales actually count for just as many points if not the prepared pieces and sight reading combined, if not more. As for the multiple octives, we're told to play two over here on every scale almost three on chromatic...so.. it's up to you.

I say play what they told you to play perfectly. Adding stuff, while it may sound nice, gives your more oppurtunities to make a silly mistake.

Congratulations. I have All-State tryouts this weekend. I hope I can do the same.
