I made Troy Honor Band, and one of the things I need to do for my audition for which band (Gold, Silver, or Crimson) and chair placements. I need to do
"Five Major scales at written pitch (Ab, Eb, Bb, C, D), sight-reading, chromatic scale one octave for brass, and two octaves for woodwinds. Chromatic scale will fit within standard publishers range for the grade two level."
-Troy Participant Information

If someone would explain the "Grades" to me, and supply me with the Grade Two Chromatic Scale (I know what chromatic scales are, but I don't know what note to start with)

I can't play C or Bb scale because it goes too high (these are both concert scales, so C is like G, and Bb is like F). I play a beginner's french horn (Yamaha YHR-314). According to another user (Name is removed, but help is appreciated from this user) "The YHR 314 is a single F horn. Playing high F and above on a single F horn is not easy and above G the notes are very easy to split. A single F horn is popular among some teachers for beginngers but as horn parts are now higher than they were 30-50 years ago, using a single Bb horn or a F/Bb double is becoming more usual and IMHO a necessary transition for Intermediate players. Obviously, playing on the Bb side uses different fingerings!" For more info, see my other board titled "New French Horn or Mouthpiece?" on the French Horn Forums.

Playing on the Bb side of a double horn makes playing higher notes more reliable."

I don't know the D scale, so if anyone has the sheet music for that, I would appreciate if they would supply it.

If anyone has experience with activities like this Honor Band, information and advice is requested and appreciated.

D major scale (from written D at the bottom of the treble clef).

D E F# G A B C# D and down again
1 0 2 0 1 2 1 1
2 2

Be prepared to play your scales tongued and slurred (legato).

A chromatic scale is not part of the ABRSM (http://www.abrsm.org) requirements for grade 2 on horn but you shouldn't have too much difficulty with

C C# D Eb E F F# G Ab A Bb B C and down again
0 1 1 2 0 1 2 0 2 2 1 2 0
2 3

I'm not sure how seriously these scales etc are taken. Most grade examination boards do not attempt a one size fits all because of the ranges of the instruments. For instance 2 octave Ab scale is impossible on oboe; two octaves C on Piccolo is theoretically possible; two octaves Bb is well beyond grade 2 on flute; and two octaves Eb on Clarinet is a big challenge.

Err the fingering has been messed up because it removed spaces!
