reading through the threads on this forum has got me thinking.
there seems to be huge diversity of people who post here, so i thought it would be interesting to ask what made you want to play horn? where do you want it to take you? ...

In 7th grade my middle school band teacher was asking a few trumpet players if they wanted to take a challenge and switch to horn. I don't know what made me say yes, but I did and I've fallen in love with the thing since.

It started with just wanting to be challenged...
And then I started to get more into music, and then after listening to so many composers and artists perform and such, it's become a life goal for me to become a great musician and share the wonders of music.

I guess there was just no other inspiration or experience out there like a life in music.

I play French horn because I love it, pure & simple. I only started back a little more than a year ago after not playing for 33 years. I practice hard, about 2 to 3 hours a day. I want the horn to land me a position in a local symphony. I also want to be invited to participate in some of the local brass concerts that the really good brass players participate in around these parts.

Hmm.
I started horn in 3rd or 4th grade, my other choice was saxophone. I think the only reason i picked horn was because they had some at the school so I didn't pay.

And now, I love it! So much fun, so different from other brass instruments, and it really is a challenge to play, but that makes it even better!

Pepino! Thanks for sharing your picture with us. You're a real cutie! Ha ha ha!

Anyway, when I was in grade school back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I started on clarinet. It totally sucked at it. My band director switched me to Eb horn. That was it, I was hooked on brass. I've played all the brass except tuba, but French horn is my favorite. No other brass instrument can compare for range, versatility and, of course, that gorgeous romantic sound. I also enjoy the challenge.

I started playing French horn in 7th grade. I really wanted to play it from the beginning because it's the instrument that my brother plays, but my dad, being the music teacher that he is, thought that I would be better off starting on trumpet and later switching to French horn. I'm a Freshman now, and I love the horn; I'm glad I started playing it, even though it had to wait for a few years after the beginning of my musical career.

I started playing french horn in 5th grade, that's the grade that they start band at my school. I wanted to go with french horn right away, only because my aunt had left one at my grandparents' house that I could use and would only have to buy a mouthpiece. I didn't want to do any other instrument only because that was the cheapest way to go, I didn't even consider anything else.

Now I'm a freshman in highschool after playing french horn for about 4 1/2 years. I'm first chair of the french horn section in the band, it's really cool. I can play really well thanks to my middle school band director. He was really particular that you play everything perfectly. The music we played in middle school was the same music they played at the highschool! In 8th grade I switched schools though, so I don't know where I'd be back at my old school.

Although my middle school band director got me to play really well, the 5th grade band director was really good at music and I caught on quick because of him. I think that's why I excelled so quickly.
