I received a great book last week, REAL WORLD HORN PLAYING by Wendell Rider. I love it. There's something on nearly every page that has helped my playing. I read Farkas's book & it was helpful for explaining the basics of horn playing, but Wendell's book offers more information that I find helpful on a daily basis. For example, I could always do my morning warm up with good tone & flexibility, but at my next practice session in the afternoon, my tone would be scratchy & my lips stiff & clumsy. In Wendell's book, he explains (with witt & good humor) what causes this & how to remedy the problem. The fix was so simple it's embarrassing that I didn't think of it myself! DUH! Now because of Wendel Rider, my tone & flexibility is more consistent throughout the day. SO... if any of you are looking for a good & comprehensive book about horn playing, I'd recommend REAL WORLD HORN PLAYING. ~~Valerie, come back horn player
