The french horn has quite different parts to Oboe - how different depends on the ensemble you play in. Wind/concert band music often has horns playing non-melodic parts - the same music arranged for full orchestra would probably not have the horns play most of the time.

French horn is often considered the most difficult brass instrument to play. Learning horn as a second instrument and being able to sight sing parts helps with pitching.

I have been playing french horn for two and a half years. Before switching to french horn Iplayed clarinet for three years and continue to practice my clarinet. The switch from clarinet to french horn was not difficult for me. My band director asked me to try french horn since we had very few in our band. I picked up the horn he handed me and he gave me a finguring chart and concert b flat pitch. He told me to try playing a f(concert b flat). I took a deep breath and gave it a shot. After a few tries i was able to play a two ovtave concert b flat major scale. At that point his eyes bulged out and he had me immedietly play a concert e flat major scale and told me I was officialy a frenh horn player. I beat out all the other french horn players and now sit first chair. I rarely have to practice and can usually site read the pieces we play in band. On the other hand i have a friend in band that switchd to Horn a little before I did and it took her a week and a half to get a decent sounding note out. Deffinately play Horn its the best instrument ive ever played and i love it!!!!!!!!
