The silent brass system is nice for all brass instruments. The plus side is that the mute is near noisless and that you can plug it into a mixing box that allows you to add reverb and control volume so you can hear yourself and nobody else can. The downside is the mute is very heavy and stuffy. I feel that when you listen to yourself in the headphones you are not getting an accurate representation of what you are playing. The I think that the best practice mute on the market in terms of intonation and freeblowingness is the Warm up mute by Best Brass.
The maker of Best Brass practice mute designed the silent brass system but broke off recently and made his own company. The Best Brass mutes are great. They are super super light weight and blow really well. They also fit in the bell. That means you can keep the mute in your bell and put your horn in the case. That way you alway have a practice mute with you.
You can find these mutes at www.hornguys.com I would suggest checking them out before you get the silent brass.
