You could look at other threads on the subject. A lot of people have asked similar questions:

(some of the things are redundant, but I think these could help)

A holton Farkas is a nice horn. The big question is . . .
WHY are you ready for a new horn? What do you want to do with the new horn?

Aha! That is a good reason to get a new horn.

On the west coast traditionally many players have favored the Conn 8D although now there a lot, and I do mean a lot of people playing the Yamaha professional models. I have also seen quite a few Paxman, E. Schmidt, and Hoyer in the professional side. On the east coast I see many Paxman and Yamaha.

If music education is your goal any of the above is good although the large Conn 8D sound I think is waneing away for the more crisp sound of the Yamaha's and Paxmans. And many of the education professors I have run across favor the Holton's. It is a good solid known sound and you won't find many problems with them.

If you can find a good Holton or Yamaha you will be very happy with it. My only suggestion is to stay away from the student models, get a student loan if you have to and buy a pro model. And stay away from the Yamaha's with hollow rotors. The hollow rotors are fast and light and perform well but they wear out. And when they do you cannot rebuilt them like solid rotors so you end up buying another new horn.

There is my 2 cent worth.

John
