Has anybody heard of a horn solo that is nearly, if not entirely, in the low range? The person in charge of our horn sectional at honor band a couple of weeks ago mentioned something about something like that, and I think it would be really cool do play that piece. (Speaking of honor band, there were 8 horns! It was so much fun! The only bad thing was that I got so nervous for the live audition that I pretty much bombed it, and I got eighth chair:}. It was still really fun though, because I got to sit next to the euphoniums, which, I have to say, are now one of my favorite instruments, second to horn, of course.) I think she mentioned it in conjunction with David Holseinger, because we were playing one of his songs, Homage: Three Tapestries.

Check out Kerry Turner's website. He is one of the horn players with the American Horn Quartet. His site is www.kerryturner.com? You can also go to www.hornquartet.com and click on the link to Kerry's website. He wrote a concerto for Low Horn and Orchestra.......

Hi-

I am an adult amateur who enjoys low horn playing and have a couple of suggestions.

A great low horn piece is Bagatelle by Hermann Neuling. It is melodic and exciting. I have heard that European orchestras use it for low horn auditions. It requires frequent switching between treble and bass clefs. It's published by Pro musica Verlag Leipzig. I bought it from http://www.thompsonedition.com/.

Before I played the Bagatelle, I worked through "Melodious Etudes for Trombone: Selected from the Vocalises of Marco Bordogni." Even though they are intended for trombone, they work really well on the horn and helped me get fluent in reading bass clef. They are melodic and I really enjoyed them.

Good Luck.
