Hello,
I'm looking into selling my son's Holton Farkas double french horn. He just graduated from h.s. and has enjoyed his horn for 6 years. I can't remember if it is a 179 or 279. I know it's considered the solid student model. Silly me, I am not a music person. I realize I would first take it to someone to get it serviced (and find out what kind of horn it is). I bought it 3rd hand for $1,100 (in 2002) from a college student who kept it in beautiful shape. It still is in excellent shape. If it is in as good of shape as I think it is, do you think I could get at least all my money back? I've been looking around and it seems like used horns in worse condition sell for even more than what I paid for my son's. Of course I would include his hard case, mouthpieces, cleaning kits etc.
Any advice?
L

You should have no problem getting back what you paid for the instrument.
If it is a x79 series the 179 is a fixed bell instrument, the 279 is a screw bell instrument.

You might try listing it on the free classifieds on Hornplayer.net. I think you should be able to get what you paid for it. I'll bet a horn teacher will snap it up in a hurry for one of his students. Last year, I was looking into buying a used Holton 177. It was in pretty bad shape & needed about $350 of work. The guy at Oberloh's said it was worth $1000 in the condition it was in. Valerie
