I went to my local music store a couple weeks ago to find something interesting to play around with while I waited for concert season to start. I was also looking for something to challenge an expecially bright but bored student. I found both in one great book: "Skilful Solos" by Philip Sparke [Anglo Music]. Fresh, new, charming, thoroughly English. Excellent piano accompaniment on CD. These solos are so much fun, I don't want to play anything else. Some are short & easy enough for a first year student, some are tough & will require more advanced skills to master, but all are charming & fun. I believe anything from this book would also be a "crowd pleaser" or a good choice for solo ensemble festival.
