Hi guys! I've been viewing a lot of posts as I search for a double horn and it's been a big help. I found out some information I haven't seen anywhere else and I wanted to share it.
I was looking at a Conn horn on Craigslist. The seller wasn't able to tell me much about it at all so I asked for the serial number, which was 56xxxxx, and I started researching. They did think the horn was made in the 90's.
Well, the Conn-Selmer page tells you that for all post 1987 horns, you add 50 to the prefix of the serial number. That would have put this horn at being manufactured in 2006, which we knew was untrue.
Yesterday I called customer service and got a wonderful representative who had worked there since the 80's. The add 50 technique was only used from 1987-@1991. After that, the first digit of the serial number denoted the plant it was made at; 5 represented Eastlake, Ohio, then the rest was the true serial number. She was able to trace the serial and identify the music store it was sold to, but not pin it to a specific year. She also was able to ID the model, which the seller didn't know.
They do not have a historical department so much of the data from the 90's is pretty murky. She did say that they computerized in 2000 so it's pretty smooth sailing from that point on.
I hope this helps someone!
