I did not intend to post this. Didn't think it would be needed, but this is happening more and more often with the new technologies. And it happened last night at a show I did.
When you are on stage you are a performer - not just a musician. This applies if you are doing a musical, opera, or even a concert with singers. You are one of the actors. And you need to act professionally. Sit properly and pay attention. Smile and show you are happy to be there (even if you are not). Don't pick your nose, don't scratch (if you leave it alone the itch will go away). Remember chances are someone in the audience is looking at you at any given moment. Don't be nervous just be porfessional.
Things NOT to do - Don't take out your cell phone or video camera and start taking pictures and video of the other performers/actors/singers. It's wrong and very unprofessional. Imagine going to see a play and when one of the actors is talking the other actors whip out their cell phones and start videoing the actor that is talking. They're no longer in character and you probably won't like the show as much. Doing this during a performance distracts the audience from the show they paid to watch.
When you are on stage as a musician, that is your part to play. You are NOT a member of the audience. Don't take pictures, don't make faces if another performer makes a mistake or sings off key. (one exception, like last night, is when the singer and piano player are in a different key than the band music - then you can look to each other and tell the others what key they are actually in). Do your best and have fun, you're lucky to be on stage.
