My daughter is in 6th grade and started on the trumpet. About 2 weeks ago she switched to French Horn. She seems to be doing really well with it and really likes playing it. She's currently using a school instrument. If she decides to continue the horn (which I think she will) I'm interested in purchasing a horn for her. I'm looking for suggestions on what brands or models are suggested and what I should stay away from. I know horns are expensive so I'm looking for something that's also relatively cheap ($1,200 - $1,500). I've purchased instruments on eBay before, so I'm not afraid of doing that. But want some advice as to how to get the best bang for my buck. I'm also checking craigslist, but I live a rural area so there isn't much there. If I'm not going to find something quality in that price range, let me know. At this point the only thing I know is that I can get a single or double horn and that she'll need a double horn. So any help is appreciated.

If you can find a new Paxman Academy compensating horn, I think they're right at the top of your range. The Lidl compensating instrument is about 1000 more than you're looking at, but a ton of instrument for the money. I only know of the HornGuys carrying them in the US, but not sure, there may be others.

My high school had a Conn 6D that I thought played pretty well. The Conn 6D I had was very responsive, which was important for me. It's not terribly expensive used. I would say it's something you could include in your research.
