After playing Horn for exactly two months, I was tormented by being fitted with braces (top only). During that time, I was playing on a mouthpiece I believed to be a V-Bach 12. Now, I have bottom braces, and recently bought a Holton Farkas DC. Which, in this case, should be the easiest to use? I DO use a (unidentified) double horn, if that information is needed. Thanks!

Okay, just to be clear, this horn I'm using is a school horn, and very old, so the horn brand is unspecified and the horn mouthpiece is also unspecified, although by research, I believe it to be a Back 12 or 12s.

The one with the wider rim may be more comfortable with braces. There's more surface area to contact your lips, so you need less force to get a good seal.

From what I read of the mouthpieces online, the Holton Farkas mouthpiece has a medium-wide rim, while the Bach has a narrow rim. These are two different manufacturers, however, so take that with a grain of salt. Plus, I may have found the wrong Farkas mouthpiece.

P.S. Sorry for the delayed response.

I am 12 years old and play french horn, I had played for 4 years when I got braces. It is SO annoying but I really can't help you, other than to play low tunes, wich is much easier.

Well neither of the mouthpieces you mention has a decent rim for braces so it's just going to come down to which fits your face and braces the best.

Neil Sanders made mouthpieces with a broad reverse peak which many with braces found to be very good. You can still get the rim from Moosewood.

The new paxman mouthpieces from Denis Wick look like they could be good but I don't have any real experience with them yet.

Some people find that a plastic mouthpiece like Kelly sells helps with braces, the plastic grips the lips a bit more and so they don't use as much pressure with plastic. Seems to be rather individual. You could also try playing with dry rather than wet lips for the same effect.

It's kind of surprising to me with all the students with braces over the years that no one comes right out and offers a mouthpiece for use with braces.

Thanks for replying.

Yeah, the HF DC mp was not for complying to my braces but rather just sound (as the school horn had a pretty badly dented backbore and the sound was horrific.
I kinda agree about the offering students braces-friendly mouthpieces. But I know my parents wouldn't exactly be for buying more expensive MPs when I'm getting my darn (sorry) braces off in hopefully less than a year.
