A local high school band teacher, who also gigs and teaches trumpet, and I were talking about this. We were both getting frustrated seeing bad (but pretty) instruments in schools and kids hands, that just discourage them from playing. He and I both do a little dent removal and that's about it, no major repairs. There are so many quality European and American instruments out there that just need 50-100 bucks of work to make them really nice. I have purchased multiple Los Angeles Olds trombones for under $50. Had a local tech do his $200 simple (not the full) slide alignment and got them in the hands of kids for $350. They are better built, sounding, and playing, than any $500 new trombone. Same with trumpets. You can still find nice kings and conns, even bueschers and B&H (Boosey and Hawkes) for the 25-50. One of my favorites is the Cleveland brand trumpet. The valves seem indestructible, and they play pretty nicely. I've found them for less than $50 in playing condition, and remove the dents myself. I think with a little looking, you could find a more satisfying, and ultimately more reliable American or European horn, than going with an Allora.
