PICK WHICH ONE YOU LIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i started with clarinet, then to piano, then to flute and piccolo now to trumpet. i like trumpet most , although i still play the other ones.... See??? you pick the one you take a liking to. challenging instruments are fun. you work harder to get to a pro level. ......sooooooo again choose the one you like. try them both!!

If your looking to listen to both instruments from diffrent perspectives try listening to The Bruce Adams & Alan Barnes Quintet (British Jazz Scene) Bruce playes the Trumpet and Flugal Horn while Alan Barnes playes the Alto & Ten Sax.I think this is a fantastic band to listen to since there perspectives on both instruments are very diffrent and yet are so tight playing together. Also check out the unforgetable Sound of Cannonball Adderley & Miles Davis playing Autumn Leaves or Love For Sale these tunes might give you the taste for either instrument.A big hello goes out to the Glasgow Youth Jazz Orchestra from yep yours truely keep those tunes`a pumpin.

I have played bothe the tumpet and saxaphone and in my opinion i think it is easier to learn the trumpet b.c there are only 3 valves to hold down and the 3rd valve is never down

I play the trumpet and its as easy as pie! Sure the high notes are fairly difficult, but once you get those its really fun just to listen to yourself play!
(Oh, and by the way, saxaphone SUCKS! A holes!

[I`m gonna respond to several people at once, so bear with me.]
Jabez,
It`s never too late to learn an instrument, it just may be a little harder. I`ve known of pro musicians who started playing less than 5 years before they became pro. If you are committed, and you really want to do it as a career, than it is more than possible, no matter what age you start at. And yes, the cancer sticks do affect your playing if you`re a wind player. You might consider quitting, or playing an instrument (eg. piano, guitar, bass, percussion) which doesn`t require the use of your lungs to play.
---------------
John,
If you think the trumpet is as "easy as pie", then you are not challenging yourself as much as you think you are. If you go to any music store and look up classical solo repertoire for the trumpet, then you will definitely find something that is by no means "easy as pie". There are some instruments that are easy to learn (like the saxophone), but some of the pieces I am learning in my private lessons are definitely not easy. It has taken 5 years of practicing and improving my tone and technique in order to become proficient enough to play them. Don`t go saying bad things about an instrument until you`ve made a legitimate effort to learn it. Then come back and talk to me with more informed comments about the saxophone.

saxaphone is way harder because you have to push so many buttons. The Trumpet only has three!

It doesnt matter which one you start out on once you learn to play and instrument it is easier to learn a second one.
It may be easier to get a clear sond on a trumpet but play with speed and good articulation can be tricky to learn.
The fingerings may be easier fo a sax but it is often harder to get a good qaulity sound going.
Most people choose thier favorite from experience.
some people like thier first instrument better because they know what they are doing and Know what to expect.
Some prefer their second instrument because it seemed harder to learn the first one.
It depends on how you look at things.
Whatever you believe is up to, but my advise is to think about what sound you prefer and go with that first!
