Hey guys, Ancencz here...( a trombone player, dont hurt meeeeeee xDDD)

I am just wondering, what is a very good, hard Jazz ensamble music??

My school did: Samba Del Gringo (professional version), Salt Peanuts (professional version), Channel One Suite (Buddy Rich band version).

Anyone got music suggestions around that level??

Have you played any Thad Jones tunes? They`re always pretty hard. Some good ones are Cherry Juice, Groove Merchant, and Thumbs. You have to have a killer sax section for those tunes. Also, Gordon Goodwin has a couple good tunes from his Big Phat Band recording, but a lot of his stuff is kinda cheesy. Anything Sammy Nestico wrote for the Basie band is good: 88 Basie Street, Freckle Face, etc. And a there are countless others composers with great, hard big band charts: Bill Holman, Bobby Brookmeyer, Don Sebesky, etc. Hope this helps.

I have some good suggestions for you. These are some charts that my band has played in the past 2 years:

- Straight no Chaser (arrangement), Thelonious Monk
- Cubauza, Michael Mossman
- Con Alman, Dizzy Gillespie
- Switch in Time, Count Basie
- Soul Vaccination, Tower of Power

Those are all sufficiently challenging charts, and they sound really good once the band has practiced them.

It should say "Con Alma."

Well, they are more likely to hurt me as a bass player than you as a trombone player! :p

Errrm, Im going back a few years, when I played in a county youth big band here in the UK, but one of my favourites from that time was a Nestico song, called Good News. I do have a copy on my HD of a performance we did at London if you want a listen?

How about Ellington`s Braggin` in Brass? :P

No, that`s really hard. It`s too fast, half note is like 168.

You could try Tom Kubis`s "Exactly Like This", it`s a great song, quite difficult. Especially that bass trombone part. Only comes out of the lower register like 2 times, during the shout section.

Hi Chris,

I`m interested in Good News, since I should play this music in the next months. Could you send a copy to me, so that I can listen this arrangement?
