Ska is some of the best music out there. It all started in Jamaica over 40 years ago. The drums put the accent on the 2nd and 4th downbeats of each measure, the guitar hits the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th upbeats, there is often a walking bass style and of course the laid back trumpets, trombones, and saxophones playing awesome melodic riffs; toss in a nice organ and you get ska.
Of course, then ska lost popularity until it reappeared in Great Britain as Rocksteady and Two-Tone. Reggae is descended from ska as well.
Then ska came in the third wave during the 90s, but most of the Jamaican element was lost and replaced with rock and punk influences.
Ska is a very flxible genre in that it can be combined with other genres for some really awesome sounds.

Check out the maladroit mafia ( http://www.themaladroitmafia.com), they are a farely new ska band that I saw at the Warped tour this past year when I went to go watch Big D and the Kids Table. They are pretty new but have potential.
