It's obvious that I'm obsessed, but that about you? Never heard of it, don't think oboes were meant for it, love it? I want to know how many other people agree/disagree with me!

I've heard the oboes in my band try to play jazz. It sounds pretty bad. Maybe it would sound better in the hands of a pro. I don't know.

Oh, no one can just PLAY it. It takes years to learn to play properly. The pros sound really good. I mean, unless the people in your band have been profesionally trained and still stink, I wouldn't put all of your judgement into those few people.

Wow. He's good, but he puffs his cheeks, which you're really not supposed to do. I guess it's a jazz thing.

He got all his instruments out! Wow! Bass oboe, english horn...

My real hero is Yoram Lachish. He's a very young jazz oboeist. He's like the God of jazz oboe!

Ack! I'm sorry! It's Paul Mccandless. It's late at night, I'm not thinking.

And I keep spelling "oboist" wrong!

*Talks to self* O-B-O-I-S-T Megan! Get it right!

Very nice.
Not too shabby. I didn't think I would like it because I you can't do the bends like with Trombone, sax, etc. But Jean Luc is pretty good besides that. Nice sound and he seems to know his scales.

Regarding an earlier comment on puffing cheeks. Who told you that?
If your embouchre is correct you should be able to puff your cheeks, AND if you don't puff your cheeks how the heck are you ever going to circular breathe?!

(From John)

Excellent point. If you didn't bring that up, I would have.

I play oboe, I don`t think it`s ment for jazz. My teacher does. When he gradutates he wants to put together a jazz band just for oboes.

What do you mean? I have seen only amateurs puff their cheeks. I don't, and I breathe just fine on my tenor and bassoon. I was told not to, and that breathing should go right from your lungs into the instrument in a straight stream, so puffy cheeks do not result. I my experience of life, I have yet to see someone in a professional orchestra puff their cheeks (exception with horns, assuming they have to blow hard to play (?)). Were you talking about certain instruments needing to puff their cheeks, becuase on the instruments I have played, I am pretty sure that you are not supposed to puff your cheeks.

Puffing cheeks has long been thought of as a no-no.
There are many, many professioanl musicians who do not puff their cheeks. If you do puff your cheeks when you are first learning you might find yourself with an incorrect embouchre, or the inability to have enough embouchre muscle tone to play well. However, with a proper embouchre puffing the cheeks (and sometimes lips) can help strengthen a correct embouchre. all my advanced and my more advanced intermediate students learn how to play with puffed cheeks properly.

It is absolutely necessary for circular breathing. I don't know of another way to circular breathe. And if you don't practice it properly you will sound like crap when you have to do it.

Professional musicians that I know who do puff their cheeks?
San Franciso Opera
San Francisco Symphony
San Diego Symphony
Redlands Symphony Orchestra
Cincinnati Symphony
Boston Symphony
Los Angeles Philharmonic
Canadian Brass
Pacific Symphony
James Gallway
-need I continue?

I believe that there is an oboe on one of the tracks from the John Coltrane "Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings." I know for sure there is a bassoon on one of the versions of Spiritual on this set.
