As said by many of the fine people on this forum; the best one is your opinion. Do you like to scream? go with a sop. tone specifications? This is one of the supiioritys of the sax; learn 1 sax, swith to others, and you can get about any tone or trick down you want.

Alright, listen. First off, any and all of the saxes are excellent for jazz(PERIOD). Like said before, it is crucial you know what kind of style you want or are playing. Tenor and Alto do have differences in tone and sound but that sure the hell doesn`t mean one will screetch or squiel more than the other while playing slower or faster pieces(ALL IT MEANS IS YOU NEED TO PRACTISE MORE). And another thing, kenny g is not to be listened to if you are interested in jazz or blues. The reason being: Kenny G is not a jazz artist, he is mearly a musician who has a pop approach to corny licks and riffs. He is known as being a fool by proffesionals worldwide for calling his music {Jazz} when all it is, is a corny pop style.

As said before, it is all personal preference. I have played all the main saxes, the alto in one big band and the tenor in another. I tend to find that in the advanced big band arrangements the alto tends to get the tune whilst the the tenor harmonizes and "fills in" the sound. However, the tenor has far more improvised solos than the alto (a bit like trumpet 1 and trumpet 2 pads really). And so I cannot decide which one I like best, I play the alto more and practice on it, but that`s just because I have a ref54 and love it. But I equally love the tenor cause I love improvising.

hey,
the alto and the tenor are both just fine for jazz but you should really go pro on the contra-bass sax, man those things are awesome....actually, i`m just kidding...don`t go pro on a contra-bass...those things are like 7 feet tall with the bell size the same as a tuba`s...and besides...there`s only about 7 in the whole world, and their probably more expensive than a sports car. But seriously, go with whatever you like the best...if you think you chose the "wrong" sax, (there really is no wrong choice, ppl even go pro on soprano...) then make somthing out of that, make yourself orginal, be different, thats how you get noticed into pro music. and its WHO YOU KNOW rather than WHAT YOU KNOW (even though what you know does matter a lot) to be able to get out there, so my advice is establish a network of people first, and DON`T burn bridges, you may need to cross them later....good luck

http://nuclearwhales.com/
just scroll down and look at the picture, you should be able to figure out which one the contra-bass is...if you can`t, well then.....

In theory it does not matter which u play jazz on. In practice however it is a little more difficult to play on alto most of the time because of the key of most standards. Because the alto is in Eb the u r in a key 3 sharps more than the Guitar, Piano bass etc. Tenor is a much easier instrument to play because you are in a key 2 sharps more. It is particularly hard when The C instruments(guitar, bass etc.) are in the key of D which means you as an alto player play it in the Key of B. where as a tenor player is only in the key of E a simpler key to play in.
Cheers

you know .. that i play alto sax for about 6 years now.. from the 6th grade.. i have learned to love it i have been in jazz since 7th grade because i just learned that fast. i really love taking solos. i see some freshman now that come into high school first year in jazz band and they are scared to take solos or even play by themselves.. i dont know why, stupid huh? well i really think that the alto is just the best. ( maybe because i have been playing for 6 years ) but i dont know.. its really a thing that you have to try all and see what YOU like the best. you know what i mean ?

Go to www.jazzbooks.com. You will find a lot of excellent music, but I`m not sure if it has the piece you`re looking for. Also, have you checked the 8notes home site? Just look around and you will find it somewhere.
