I`m trying to find a jazz cd of a band consisting of guitar, stand up bass, drums, and possibly piano, with no vocals. I`ve heard some bands like this on the radio that just had instumental songs and traded off solos, but I have no idea what any artist`s names are. Any suggestions of popular bands like this that I would be able to find cd`s on an online store such as Amazon?
Thank you for your help!

I know of a few bands that might suit your tastes. Jimmy Bruno is a guitarest, but he`s been with several groups, some with horns and some without so you`ll have to pick and choose with him. Pat Metheny plays guitar, but he`s normally with more than just bass, piano and drums. John Scofield is the same way. Some of Vince Guraldi`s later stuff is for the type of combo you mentioned. Besides that, I don`t know of any other piano-bass-drums-guitar groups off hand. You might want to try checking on Google or Yahoo for some names. Or you might try asking a store clerk at Barns and Noble or Boarders.

Try John Scofield`s "Works For Me.." cd. It consists of drums, (double) bass, piano, guitar and saxophone.

I sincerely hope you like that cd I recommended, I haven`t heard the other one you bought. I bought the "Works For Me" cd a while ago but I thought it was just ok when I first got it. Over the past month it really started to grow on me - just great stuff. I find myself humming the melody and solos in my head while at work.

John Scofield has been around the scene for a long time, he`s got a distinctive guitar sound and playing style that you`ll recognise anywhere.

The other musician I was familiar with on the cd is Christian McBride the bass player. He`s an in-demand session and performing bass player on the double bass as well as elec bass.

What instrument do you play and what started you looking for this kind of jazz?

I play guitar, but I`ve always been into rock. I just heard some jazz like this in a coffee shop and flipping through radio stations while on a long trip. I kinda wanted to get more into it because its relaxing and because I just want to expand my influences as much as possible. The "Up at Night" cd has a lot more funk and fusion than jazz, so I thought that would be a good thing to expand as well.

Tell me what you think of the "Up All Night" cd, I might go get it from the store.

There you go.
I`m glad to find Scofield fans, I`m a big fan of his myself. He`s got such control on his instrument, I mean he always pick the string exactly like the way he wants to make it sound; he doesn`t try to impress anyone by overplaying like most guitarists do, he knows what he got and he got it good. He`s my main influence right now.
If you`re looking for sheet-music of his go his official site: www.johnscofield.com
You`ll find hand-righted lead sheets on different albums plus a biography plus music, etc.
My favorite album of his would be "A gogo" featuring Medeski, Martin and Wood (respectively a keyboardist, a drummer and a bassist...you HAVE to know this band.) Really moody album, mostly funky, urban, easy-going, with a strong background on wich Sco blows like there ain`t gonna be no tomorrow.
In the early 90`s, he used to have a band with Denis Chambers on drums and and Gary Granger on bass. It,s a little bit more rockand fusion but man what a trio.
Recently he made an album with a trio (john Pattitucci on bass and Peter Erskine on drums) plus a Big Band and a symphonic orchestra, in collaboration with american composer Mark-Anthony Turnage. A motherfocking good album.
Some dude here was looking for trios and quartets featuring guitar. Here it is:
-Oscar Peterson(p), Joe Pass(g), Niels-Hennings Orsted Pedersen(b), Martin Drew(d) or Louis Belson (d)
album to look for: "Night Child", "If you could see me now"
-Pat Martino(g) with different formations
albums:"Footprints"
-Pat Metheny(g), Dave Holland(b), Roy Haynes(d)
album:"Question and answer", my favorite of his
-Biréli Lagrène( a Django-Reinhardt-plus-10 jazz and gipsy guitarist, one of my idols)
jazz album:"Standards" w/Niels-Hennings Orsted Pedersen(b), André Cecarelli(d), and a piano player
gipsy albums(it diserves the look):Gipsy Project(2002)
-Emily Remler(oh my god a girl):
stuff she did with Pedersen(b), Marvin "Smitty" Smith(d) and Hank Jones(p)

...just to name a few
