Emo/Screamo is not for real musicians    12:08 on Sunday, December 4, 2005

Sorry...I am an old fart and I have been in the rock music business since the late 70`s. I have sat behind a mixing console and mixed for the best and the worst! I recently had the pleasure (not!) mixing for several months at a venue for several screamo/emo/indie/alternative bands in South Florida area(I was doing the FOH for free to help out) and I can say that I am clueless as to what the draw is. ALL the bands had talented musicians, but their music was so lacking that it was sad and it certainly did not take a lot of talent (well maybe the drummers had to be good since they had to master a sharp sounding double kick).

I always had pride in the fact that in my mixes, I worked hard to insure the vocalist was clear in the mix, so the words he/she was singing could be heard...they were important to the music! With this screamo etc genre`, I figured out that words were not important and the the screaming/burping/barking vocals covered with a pounding double kick drum and 4 cord bass rif was all that was important....my job was easy then...mix in a lot of kick drum, distort the vocals and off we go. The guitar players rarely if ever played anything resembling a solo rif and the bass players, well, a sample loop playing over and over would work just as well!
To all you screamo/emo what ever you want to label your music, musicians...do your self a favor and find some real music to play. This stuff is, well lacking. Any real musician would run away from this stuff.

I like ( and own) lots of rock music from the 60`s to today. Having been in the rock music scene for a long time, I have had the pleasure of being part of it and enjoying the many variations (read labels) of rock, but I can say that this style needs to go away....

...oh, the emo thing is for wimps anyway..any self respecting human being who had any sort of a back bone can only point and laugh at emo music and the emo crowd! One day my daughter turned on "Dashboard" and when she got out of the car to be dropped her off, I had to quicklly change to Metallica so I would not feel the need to cry :-P . What a bunch of cry babies!

ROCK ON!

You know how youger adults are always told to respect their elders? Well this is a prime example of why that statement is true. Soundsorcerer knows the difference between good music and bad music. Emo/screamo is just plain bad music. I went to a bar the other day to give screamo a chance. After the 3rd band I couldn't believe that there were actually kids on the dance floor singing along. How could they even know what they are singing? I watched the backup guitarist play the first four frets of the E A D strings the whole time, he obviously has never ventured into the unknown and often scary realm of up the fretboard. I was wondering if he could even play me an E Major scale. Bassist played the same uninteresting loop, which any no-talent-a$$-clown can do. Needless to say this music is just another outlet for confused teens, that have such hard and dramatic lives. I believe that emo/screamo will pass just as any other fad. It will just go down as NSync and Bakstreet Boys did. Young fans that really don't know what good music sounds like, and then when they here good music, they understand why emo/screamo sucks my balls.

One more thing. The biggest test for any music is the test of time. Obvioulsy bands from the 60's and 70's have stood that test, because even mainstream America is buying into them STILL. It is never hard to see a Zeppelin, Hendrix, or Stones T-Shirt somewhere, and at least 3 radio stations in any city of over 200,000 people will be dedicated to Classic rock. Why? Because they are appealing to the demand, for good music.

Don't get me wrong, I like even the rock that is out today! Good music is good music....I am sure my tastes have matured, but I have not lost the It is great to have a wide range of musical interests since listining to the sames thing day after day can be boring!
Some days I like to head bang, the next I want to hear some Memphis Blues and the next day a little Miles Davis....then back to some godsmack...I will be the first to admit that Rap and Pop in general holds little interest to me since it represents the prostitution of the music business..what started out as something from the sole has turned into a way to turn a profit ( I know, a most venues have this issue to some degree)

Like with any venue, there is good and bad, it just seams that the this type of music is a LIKELY place for "want to be" musicians who lack vocal or musical ability and think they are getting away with something. Yes, I think this is a fad too, but it seems to be lingering.

Blah Blah Blah...

Yes, yes...I hear that at my house too! To the point, this venue of music lacks sole and is simply a fad that further exploits teens in the name of music to make a profit off of said teens. Or simply put, this is not music but a rip off.
